people buy a receiver where the tuner is usually thrown in as a carrot but don't give that marginal tuner a chance by expecting it to pull in weak stations with a twinlead T-type throwaway "antenna", and this in the day when radio stations are cutting corners too.
the very cheapest FM antenna mounted on the roof perhaps mounted to the chimney, will be the best thing you can do for reception. IF ratshack still has those for $20-30, grab one asap and feel lucky.
"I once read a PROFESSIONAL review for a really nice pair of inexpensive towers and I couldnt tell if he was saying if they sounded good or not. It made me mad,"
it would be nice to see that review. there are some reviewers like dick olsher that are so ingrained in the technical side in which they are expert that they can't relate what the sound is like and factor in the actual cost. they are exposed to the best and that standard is hard to break away from. that inexpensive speaker may give you time to sock away enough to buy a really good speaker.
