just like print reviewers, you learn who to trust when you get to hear the component yourself. if you hear the device at a brick and mortar (selling from and the establishment where demos are carried out in a system and other products are also sold) dealer, then you owe it to him to make your purchase there IF you buy the product.
buying on the internet after hearing the item at a store is wrong. the dealer pays rent, insurance, and possibly employees, maybe even benefits. not to mention the time and trouble too present it to you.
when I first read the XLM review in the then new tas, i just went and purchased it from a store due to the relatively low price. it sounded EXACTLY as good as the review stated. instantaneous trust. compared with stereo review and the JBL L100 review which was pure fallacy, i was forming my opinions early on.
one warning to me is when the reviewer writes way too many words. it's like they are being paid by the word count. sometimes a product warrants many more words due to the complexity of the design/execution so that is to be considered.
