Sidebar: The 5th Dimension was not a manufactured group. They might not have been the original singers of Up Up and Away, but they used a LOT of popular songwriters of the day.
If I recall (dim memory) the group started with just Billy Davis and Marilyn McCoo and then they attached "other dimensions", as it were (obviously there were a few name changes of the group along the way.)
I have pleasant memories of them as they were the first popular group I saw live in concert (I probably was in 4th or 5th grade in elementary school.)
I believe they popularized several songwriters into eventual performers in their day (from what I recall and confirmed with wikipedia - yeah, I know the "all knowing tool"... ;-)
As far as the "separate" beauty contest is concerned (I agree with your sentiment - I guess "Nice genes and physical fitness based on semi-local standards for mostly non-minorities contest" would be a bit lengthy... there were several AA contests of various names for the simple fact that Black folks were not allowed in to most contests. That was the 60s for you (and although our society has come a long way, we aren't quite there yet.)
To end on a positive note (so to speak) the 5th Dimension was cool a group!
Happy Listening!
