January 2001 Stereophile article by Charles Hollender about Sidney Smith who passed the previous October22, 2000. It states he worked for Radio Craftsman who built the first Williamson based amplifier for mass production. Later, it says "Sid looked up Saul Marantz, an advertising writer and music lover who, in the early '50s had gained a reputation by producing a cottage-industry preamplifier. Sid designed a "Willie" for the fledging Marantz company, and the rest is history."The original Williamson had a 2 stage input due to tube gain considerations only; Otherwise the circuits look very similar.
I have an original Marantz publicity pamphlet for both the 8B and the model 9 and the statement about stability is "exceptional stability", not absolute stability.
