...There's no mention of operatiion w/o load in my (original) 8B instruction manual (sheet actually). My 8B is totally stable in all respects with any load including open circuit. This is consistent with Marantz claims of absolute stability under any load condition. As suggested elsewhere, if your 8B runs away with non-optimum loads, it's in need of service.
Also, the basic circuit is not a "Williamson" whether in pentode or triode mode. It's mostly a refined Mullard 20-20 with triode input instead of pentode.
