... because conscientious retailers, manufacturers, and consumers are WAY above average. Our longstanding "math problem" is deeply ingrained in our methods and our mentality. The solution, IMO, is to GRADUALLY turn away from it.
In the meantime, just do the best you can. In the meantime, let a selection of "average retailers" know that you are willing to pay more in order to support them and their crews in a mathematically correct, functional, "living wage" situation.
Because I don't believe that Amazon or it's customers are intent on doing much to help achieve the above stated goal, either gradually or all at once, it's up to above-average, conscientious consumers to begin supporting conscientious businesses dedicated to the achievement of the above stated goal.
Most of the only conscientious businesses that conscientious consumer are going to find will be smaller ones. And as conscientious consumers we should, of course, expect to pay more than we might over at Amazon.
There's no guarantee that a small business or company will be the least dysfunctional place to shop, but it's more likely that it will be so.
Once again, expect to pay more. Then, hopefully, we'll eventually pay less in both upfront and associated costs.
