My guess is that Amazon (for instance) is not paying all of it's employees a "living wage" suitable for the area they live in. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.The economy (of a business or a nation) should be considered to be "dysfunctional" unless all adult workers in it are making a "living wage". Once it is determined that there is a definite need for any type of service, the monetary compensation provided for that service should be sufficient to ensure the ongoing survival of the servant. Otherwise, the economy is a "broken" one. This is simple math.
If/when this simple math problem isn't honored then some people deemed essential to an economy's ongoing viability are getting "screwed". The typical solutions to our ongoing math problems? Among other things:
1) The acceptance of a certain level of poverty and poverty-related crime amongst our citizenship, as if these things were unavoidable.
2) A dependence upon an influx of legal and illegal immigrant laborers willing to work for less than the living wage, because there is no other to make things "work". If/when an adequate supply of cheap immigrant labor is wanting or is difficult to sponsor, we'll turn to Asia where the supply of cheap labor seems never-ending.
If the above is what we choose to support then we must believe that a broken economy is an OK thing...
Then, good luck to all of us.
