Those are excellent questions and deserve more of a reply than I am currently able to give. I would suggest watching at least the first 15 minutes of the video I linked as a start.
Stehno linked another video with which I am unfamiliar, but that would likely be another good place to start.
Another good place to start is "The People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn. (I think they even made it into a movie.)

It's not an easy journey to take to learn that pretty much everything you think you know is simply wrong. It doesn't happen overnight.
