I lived in the DC area in the early 1970's. I remember seeing Dixie HiFi's ads in the Sunday paper regularly.
My girlfriend (at the time) was a student at AU and had been saving money for a stereo system. Because I had what was considered a pretty good system (2105, C28, 1209, V15II, AMT 3's) she asked me for help. We wound up at Dixie HiFi in Kensington, MD. I recommended Dynaco seperates but they were too complicated for her, so she wound up with a Marantz receiver, a 1209, and a pair of A25's. I hooked them up for her when we got back to her apartment. Everyone was thrilled at the sound she was getting from this fairly modest system and needless to say, I reaped the benefits later that night ;-).
IIRC, Dixie discounted some brands very heavily, but judging by the tremendous volume of gear I observed leaving that store in one afternoon they were doing quite well. Circuit City was but a pale imitation of Dixie when it came to audio equipment.
Cheers,
SB
