I'm not sure I understand what this means. Did you get the item for 40% less? Or somewhere in between?
I've always understood that the cost to a dealer on electronics and speakers is about 60% of the MSRP (Apparently dealer cost is less on things like cables and accessories) which leaves the difference for the dealer to cover his overhead and, hopefully, some profit. So, I don't think the 40% is out of whack, but on the other hand, he probably shouldn't have stated it the way he did.
Not having been there it's hard to understand what actually transpired, but I've found over the years that most dealers (not all certainly) will bend somewhat on prices. But not 40%, unless it's a demo or clearance item.
My final thought is that unless he simply refused any discount at all after you asked, you might have given him an opportunity to reduce the price somewhat, especially if he spent any appreciable amount of time with you.
