Just to be clear?
If he's looking to get 40% MARGIN on each sale, everything is "marked up" about 67% over cost.
If he's simply marking things up 40%? He's only pulling in a bit under 29% MARGIN.
For straight retail, 29% margin/40% markup should be profitable. 40% margin/67% markup is pure gravy.
