Personally "deal" customers are always the worst and long term they are just a hassle. Better to let them walk sometimes.
And 40% is pretty standard and its a guess but online is probably in the same neighborhood or even more because of the reduced costs. Problem is that the Op was using the dealers resources and when he is no longer in business because the Op saved a few bucks, there will be no showroom or knowledge base to consult. Dealers can be helpful if they arent blatant asses.
When i bought my dynaco cdp i worked it out with the dealer and told him i saw it on line for $50 less. We met in the middle and both were happy. I certainly benefitted from his knowledge, especially on tubes i could swap.
