There are considerations here that aren't made clear in your posting. I assume the dealer you spoke to was at a brick-and-mortar audio store? Was the entity from whom you bought your component an online seller/supplier who did not have to pay rent and maintain listening rooms? That is a problem and a reason why audio stores give up dealing with products available online--people expect a retailer, who has many expenses not paid by an online seller--to meet that seller's price.
The retailer could have offered to negotiate with you.
I relate this to musical instrument sellers. I went into a store to buy a new guitar. I ended up paying near list price for it, an unfortunate "impulse buy" that cost me a lot. Had I waited and done some research, I would have discovered the guitar was widely discounted nation-wide and could have been had for hundreds less from a comparable brick-and-mortar retailer. Live and learn.
All this being said, I suspect many of us audiophiles have run across arrogant, rude and bullying audio dealers who denigrate well-regarded components they do not sell. When I run across one of those bozos, I usually head for the door.
