Excellent example! The Marantz was high quality, but did not have all the things we take for granted these days:
Multiple egulated power supplies for the audio circuitry.
Regulated DC for the filament supplies.
A nice non-magnetic aluminum chassis with a substantial faceplate.
Metal film 1% resistors.
Polystyrene or polypropylene capacitors.
High quality input and output connectors - not just tin-plated stamped steel.
The list goes on and on, but the 8B pretty much was a somewhat nicer version of the Dyna Stereo 70 ($149 assembled, $99 kit), but with somewhat better parts.
Who would pay $2700 today for a brand new Dyna Stereo 70? Not many, although a pristine Marantz 8B might fetch that much, largely due to rarity and the propensity for the Japanese market to revere things made to the highest possible quality - at least for that time.
Probably the closest to this model is Rogue, as they make some very basic tube amps, but they look a lot nicer than an 8B or a Stereo 70 and have much nicer connectors. I don't think they have super fancy regulated power supplies - but I could easily be wrong. I just don't think it's possible to do so and sell at the price points they are hitting. But definitely excellent value and very good sound - just like the 8B and Stereo 70 - but new with a warranty and better looking.
Obviously just my opinions and only partially based on facts. Please feel free to correct any incorrect assumptions I have made.
