The average income in 1962 was around $4300. So $285 is a huge amount of money to spend on an amplifier. It is all relative.
Too many times these discussions get stuck in the absolute price of something. $285 today will hardly buy a good set of interconnects. But in 1962 it would buy a SOTA amplifier.
