You are probably right in that it is a little more "disjointed" than some others of his time. I agree that he was very enjoyable live if I remember correctly. We also have to remember that he was a pretty big abuser of "chemicals" and that may have contributed to some of his wandering. To me he is a lot like Coco Montoya. I really liked him live but his recorded stuff is not very good.
