RE: The Roy Buchanan enigma

Much of Roy Buchanan's original "mystique" was that at the time he was "discovered", all of the major rock/pop/blues acts were really just kids. George was only 17 when The Beatles became famous, Hendrix was 23 when he played Monterey Pop - in short it was a young man's game.

In contrast Roy was 38 (?) when he signed to a record label. There aren't many who become famous late in life. Some are like Shawn Colvin, who had been playing since junior high school but didn't become famous until her first album at age 34 (?) which won a Grammy! Another is David Wilcox (the folk guy from North Carolina) who didn't even pick up a guitar until age 24. I think there is some famous jazz musician (saxophone or guitar?) who also didn't even start playing until his early 30s. I want to say Wes Montgomery - not sure if that's right, but someone of that stature.

I liked Roy's debut album the most, but personally found little musical growth after that and lost interest quickly. By "musical growth", I don't just mean becoming technically more proficient on one's instrument, but instead exploring new genres and expanding the overall musical horizons - like The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Peter Gabriel, and even Talking Heads. As always YMMV - it's strictly opinions and taste when it comes to music.
