It was actually round the other way. The mono versions were the final masters made with the Beatles themselves in the studio approving wnat was done. They were the echt Beatles intention.

The Beatles then left the studio personnel to cobble together a stereo version as EMI ( not George Martin nor the Beatles) required one for the then limited UK stereo market ( stereo never caught on as a mass market medium here until the late sixties, early seventies).

Of course this all relates to the original Parlophone issues. Capitol Records remixed or re-equalised the Beatles recordings for what they considered was more suitable for the USA market. I am therefore assuming that you are referring to the Capitol issues and would recommend that you get to hear some UK original monos or the 2014 mono LP set which was made from the UK masters. Of course Magical Mystery Tour was not originally issued as an LP in the UK but I understand that whilst the format of the USA LP is used for this re-issue* it was mastered from the original UK tapes.

* It sold in large quantities in the UK as an import LP. The UK original Issue was a pair of EPs.
