Are the different pieces of the circuit doing the same thing when on vs actually playing music? Power supply transformers are probably doing SOMETHING just by supplying power to an idle unit. Output devices, capacitors in the signal path, etc. are probably not doing their little swithchy bursty jobs when sitting idle. Passing signal surely does more to the active devices in the signal path.If you don't believe that electrical devices can change in performance and general characteristics with use, then why do some of them wear out eventually? I venture that some electrical devices will sound better with use for a while and then deteriorate (tubes), some need break-in and then stay constant with consistent use (wires as long as they don't oxidize), some will just begin a degradation with age and current flow and will not sound better with time. Why should a wire, capacitor, transistor, diode sound better after 100hrs? I dunno but I've sure heard break-in with my equipment, especially wires! Just part of the mystery that hold the cult together?
Sorry for not being technical, but you didn't get much of an answer and I just thought I'd pass along a simple way to justify the idea of change with time....
