When I try such an "A-B" test, it is often after extended listening (I get used to "A"), where I then make the change, play the last track again, and then play selected earlier tracks. Then do extended listening with "B". I then try the same thing a few days later, just to confirm what I was initially hearing. ("A" in the second trial is often what "B" was the first trial.) In this particular case, the differences were consistent.I also will not discount the possibility of sample variation between optical cables.
