This is a thorny issue and what I'm about to say is not condoning lack of cooperation or rudeness on the part of a seller. However it does raise the issue of who should be responsible for shipping damage.
IMO the seller has the responsibility to pack the item very carefully to protect it from the rough handling generally encountered. I think most of us have been staggered at how damaged an item can get despite all care being taken. It is almost getting to the stage that items need to be double boxed and I would not think it unreasonable for a buyer to insist on that and have a written affirmation from the seller that this has been done.
However from there on I feel it is the purchaser's responsibility to insure the item and choose the method of shipping etc. As the purchaser, by that time, actually is the owner and the item was purchased without guarantee, then it is up to the new owner to be responsible for its safe transit. If damage occurs then the new owner can claim from the shipping company.
I realise that a different scenario applies to new goods as they are under guarantee so it is in the sellers interest to accept responsibility for shipping, insurance etc as they usually charge for that.
Maybe these ideas are out of line with normal practice? Just my opinion, not the result of any bad selling or buying experiences but certainly aware of how carelessly many shipping companies handle goods.
