Having built my first audio kits in 1961 (Dyna) I've been at this for quite a while. My observations agrees exactly with what you said. The better the amps, the more similar they sound, with the evolution going toward no particular sound character the better they get. They disappear. In the early days of SS amps they obviously sounded different (and much poorer in my opinion) that tube amps. Now, a first class SS amp sounds very similar to a quality tube amp. That is, they have very little effect on the music other than amplifying it. I'm sure many will strongly disagree with this, but I have found coloration of the sound goes down with quality. Maybe that's one definition of quality.
Of course with speakers it is a whole different matter. Every speaker is a compromise, and it's how the compromises were evaluated and chosen that makes a real difference. And many people love tube amps, saying that they are warmer or more musical than SS amps. I happen to now have some excellent tube amps (ARC) bit I can't they their sound is warmer or richer than the best SS amps I have had. As the quality of my amps has gone up, I find the most obvious improvement is the sense of air, space around the instruments, like the sound is originating in real three dimensional space. In other words, closer to live music. My new (used) Vandersteen 5A Carbons take this air business to a whole new level.
