I'm going to have a hard time accepting the end of Listener. On one level it was "simply" a very well-conceived and executed magazine about audio equipment and music recordings. (No small feat, as is evidenced by its past and present competitors.) But on another level, it ventured into the great unknown. With a corp of top-notch writers like the late Harvey Rosenberg, the ever-astounding Herb Reichert and Art himself, Listener kept pushing the envelope of what a magazine could be, asking questions of its readers and itself about the nature of listening to music and our relationship with the universe, all of this this done with a skeptical, self-deprecating wit.
Of course it wasn't perfect but damn, it was close. As far as I know, there is nothing out there being published anywhere with the same sense of irreverence for all things pompous and overpriced and a sense of reverence for all that really matters in life. And I'm not just talking about the little pond of hi-fi publications, but also about the greater ocean of publcations at large. If anyone reading this has encountered such a publication -- print or online -- I'd love to hear about it.
For a while at least, what will remain is the community Listener created. Unfortunately with Listener gone, the members of this community will have no fire around which to gather, tell stories and warm themselves against the cold.
Thank you, Art, Janet, Dr. Gizmo, Herb, et al., for making such a great campfire. I wish you the best of luck with whatever's next.
