I'm mainly getting it because I believe my VAC ren 30 amp, due to solid state rectification and absence of slow voltage warm-up, may be partly causing my Svet 300B's to die, which tend to die within weeks usually crackling on cold turn-on.
I want to try a Variac to slowly ramp up the voltage to see if this helps with tube life, so I just ordered one from MCM electronics for $75. It's the Tenna unit, 120V input, 1-130V output, 10 Amp. Did I get the right one? I suppose if the sonics deteriorate due to Variac, I can always bypass it once the amp is warmed up. However, wouldn't it sort of act as a line conditioner because of a the transformer? and Constant voltage should help also, right? My amp is rated to output 30W max and has fully regulated power supply and ALWAYS draws 300W from wall, even idle or full output. This should not overly tax the 10A variac, should it?
