Re: Best Home Theater speaker system... for UNDER $600

I have heard the Energy Take 5 as well as the Infinity HTS-20 and one JBL setup (don't remember which) and the Energy's clearly were the better system, especially for music. As somebody else pointed out, $600 doesn't leave you much room, but the Energy's should be more than adequate considering your budget. With regards to the sub, I don't think you absolutely need 20 Hz response, and for under $600 for a whole set, I doubt you'll find anything that will do 20 Hz very well. My setup only goes down to 34 Hz, and I don't think I'm missing anything. You can get the Energy's with an 8" or 10" sub- the 8 will work with smaller apartments, but the 10 is probably best for most medium sized rooms.
If you're feeling saucy, check out Ubid. They're selling discontinued, brand new, DCM KX-6 speakers. I picked up a set to use in my bedroom or maybe hook up to my computer. They're fairly unobtrusive, go down to 60 Hz, and have medium-high sensitivity (94 dB). The best part is, you can get them for $19 each. You could get four of those, the DCM KX center speaker (I think for around $45 at Ubid) and then just go find a sub. with the left over room in your budget, you just might be able to find a sub that will handle 20 Hz if you feel you need it. But if you really want to keep it cheap, you could use this approach to easily put together a complete speaker system for under $350 and have it sound pretty decent for the money.
I must inform you that I have not actually heard those DCM's (the KX6) yet. I just ordered (won) them two days ago, and they won't arrive by the time I leave town for a few days. So it will be two weeks before they will be broken in enough to evaluate them fairly. If you want I can email you my findings when they are available. I have heard the larger DCM KX-10 floorstanders- not too shabby for inexpensive, decently efficient speakers. Of course I heard them improperly set up in a Circuit City "listening room" (if you can call it that), not an ideal environment. I usually take opinions at Audioreview.com with a grain of salt, but most of the people who posted about the KX-6 seemed to like them, for what it's worth.
In the end, you'll just have to listen to as many setups as possible and decide what you like! Good luck.
