My folks picked up a cheap home theater set that actually sounds quite good for the money. They are by SEA, and seem very solid and well-constructed. Somebody has been selling some excess stock or something on ebay real cheap. I tried to find a current auction, but they are over for now. However, here is a link to the page from the last auction where he was offering 5 sets and sold none of them, so you may be able to contact him about purchasing some.The link is to the 8.0 series. My folks got the 4.0 for considerably less, but the 8.0 still comes under your budget. The sub with the cheaper system was a passive, but I don't know about the system 8.0. Good Luck.
