My mother worked all her life as a waitress, and I do have some grasp of tipping. In the USA, the normal salary of a server is minimum wage or so. The rest is in tips. It should be added to the bill, as it is in Europe, at 15%. Unfortunately, we don't do it in the USA. It is best to tip 10-20%, (10% for marginal service), It is just the custom here. When you come from a country that doesn't 'tip' it may seem silly, but it is a serious factor for the people who serve you in restaurants.
