Re: The incompetence everywhere is refreshing, isn't it?

You know,

I do not want to offend those inmates who live in the US of A, a country I both admire and respect, who's people have always with a few exceptions been downright friendly and helpful to the humble Aussie tourist on my many visits there.

But one complaint... my wife and I recently enjoyed our honeymoon in the US, travelling across the country. One thing that annoyed us on the trip was the expectation of a gratuity. I must admit in some places they gave you the impression that they would call the cops if the gratuity wasn't what they expected... despite the service. Perhaps because we were tourists we fell for this when knowledgable American's who know how things work would probably have told some people to wistle for the tip !!!

In Australia, tipping is not customary, although some restaurants include a service fee which they later pay to customer focussed employees as a bonus. Some establishments forbid their employees from accepting gratuities of any kind.

I don't mind leaving a gratuity when the service was good, but it's just the expectation that is so annoying.
