There is a dealer in my area that I have frequently dealt with. I ended up buying a tube amp and tube output CD player from him. About 1 week after buying the tube amp it blew up. I had mentioned to him that I had swapped out the stock 6922 tube for a 7308 tube and he tells me that what I did caused the amp to blow up. I take the amp down to him to be looked at. He needs the amp for a few days and decides to give me another unit he has on the floor. Two weeks later he calls me up and tells me the reason the amp blew up was because one of the resistors came loose during shipping. The blow up ended up taking out one of the capacitors. He proceeds to replace the capacitor with a cheap replacement and tells me it won't have any effect on the sound and wants me to swap the unit back for the repaired one.
This same unit has had some hum problems as well. After many contacts (e-mails and phone calls) with the manufacturer I was informed that a new quieter transformer is available and can be swapped out for the one I have. The dealer tells me that there is no way the new transformer will reduce the amount of hum coming through the speakers. For his floor model he adjusts the front volume pot down so that the hum is not heard and says that is what I should do. I have mentioned to the dealer that I tried what he did and I found the sound to be better when the volume pot is wide open. When the transformer comes in, I am told that I would need to leave the amp with him for a few days. Not feeling very comfortable with the dealer, at this point, I decided to replace the transformer myself. After a couple hours of work I installed the new transformer. Surprise, surprise the new transformer actually does what the manufacturer told, its reduces the about of hum through the speakers my a wide margin. When I call up the dealer to tell him that the new transformer actually is quieter he gives me silence and has nothing to say.
Now the part that really pisses me off is when I ask the dealer to get a particular amp for me to demo. He carries the line and I wanted to home demo a certain SET amp. He tells me, that he is carrying enough SET amps and won't be carrying anymore in the store. Well I come to find that within the next two weeks the dealer starts putting more SET amps on the floor and actually picks up another more expensive line of SET amps.
Well, after all this I made myself one promise. And that promise is to go out of my way to not buy anything from this dealer. In fact, I will find another dealer (even if it is in another state or country) that carries what I am looking for even though my local dealer carries the same line. And you know what, I am now doing that. That dealer does not know how stupid he is and how much business he is now loosing from me. I am in the process of building two different systems for my relatives including multiple tube amps, turntable, speakers, etc. Vindication feels really good.
