General audio topics that don't fit into specific categories.

Something has changed

When I was last a teenager, about 25 years ago, the audio salespeople at higher-end stores always had time for me. They loved to show off all their best equipment and explain things. Hooking up an unusual set of components was never too much trouble, in fact they were enthusiastic about it. They taught me how and what to listen for. They knew I wasn't buying, since I used to come back a lot and just listen. There were so many of the salespeople I liked, and not one was ever dismissive. It seems that now the audio stores would prefer if you were totally ignorant and unquestioning, just pick out components as though grocery shopping, pay and quickly leave. I think the audio retail trade reflects the same level of service one finds generally these days. Even if you don't like them, places like WalMart and Home Depot have old-fashioned service values that I'm sure are reflected by their success. I am pleased to pay for service, but when I don't get any, I'd just as soon not pay as though I had.
