I've told this story before...

but it bears repeating!
In this humble town located in South Central PA there is a college that some extremely wealthy people send their daughters to be educated. The daughter of the Indonesian ambassador entered a local jewelery establishment and was ignored. She stood at the counter for about half an hour and then walked to the center of the store. Opening her purse she started tossing hundred dollar bills onto the floor counting them as she did. When she had reached a few thousand she loudly declared, "I guess I don't have enough money to shop here!" She then collected her money and walked out! The funny thing is that the (deceased) owner of the shop probably rolled over in his grave! He was one of the kindest men I'd ever met...'tis a shame that the people his wife has running the store never learned anything from him...musicoligists here may know his name, Egon Gartenburg (He wrote several treatises, but was mainly known for his works on Mahler).

I work in a small electronics "wanna-be" high end store. I learn quite a bit from these exchanges...I wonder why there aren't other salesman and owners benefitting from this knowledge! You would think that the stuffed shirts in the D.C. area (you people in that area know to whom I refer) and the rest would at least hear SOME of the comments voiced here! Or are they permanently deafened by the sound of cash registers ringing with those $100,000 + sales?

On the other hand...I try to treat people the way I wish to be treated but it is hard with some...the customers who know more than I are usually a lot of fun...they're as nuts as I am and we share our enthusiasm...but the ones who THINK and ACT as if they know everything, ask to hear some speakers (or whatever) and then don't bring any CD's of their own or give you the ambiguous, "I listen to a little bit of everything," then frown at what I put on drive me crazy!
I hesitate to say this, but the classical listeners always bring great stuff, the young people bring music that I wildly run for a paper and pencil to write down the name of the CD, the Jazz guys bring wonderful stuff...but the country western people NEVER bring in anything! If I put on Willie, they hate Willie! If I put on the Dave Grisman guitar/mandolin stuff they get a "What the hell's this," look on their face...If I hand them a bunch of CD's they say, "Oh just put anything on," and then give me "the look," when I put on what they OBVIOUSLY don't want to hear. Obviously and thankfully there are exceptions...but damn few!

Maybe it's that this is the northern reaches of Appalachia and I'm just dealing with idiots? I'd like to think that I'm wrong...I AM willing to make the effort (and can prove that I DO NOT treat THEM like idiots in the first place!), any ideas?
