Their are a lot of good dealers out there, just choose the right ones. Like you I was recently shopping for a new amp. Had some less then satisfactory experiences but some really good ones too. Called Audio Advisor in Michigan. They were very helpful on the phone and shipped me a Musical Fidelity amp for trial right away. When I decided it didn't fit my tastes, they took it back with absolutely no hassle.

I then went to a dealer local to me, Audio Concepts here in Houston. They were very helpful. Offered to rearrange one of their listening rooms to accomodate equipment comparison. Without my asking, offered to let me take an Arcam amp home for trial. Very accomodating and again no hassles.

I wanted to try a Plinius amp but couldn't find one locally. Called Galen Carol Audio in San Antonio. I had never talked to them before and they don't know me from Adam. No problem. They shipped me the amp I wanted for home trial that afternoon. Called a week later to see if I liked it or wanted additional time before they charged me for it. Again exemplary service and no hassles.

The moral. Don't paint all dealers with such a broad brush and patronize those who treat you well so they'll be around the next time you want something.
