My grandmother lived with us when I was a child, and in our town we had two drugstores. One of the drugstores was just around the corner from our house. The other one was over three miles away. My Grandmother would always buy from the drugstore that was furthest away when she needed something.I asked her why she bothered to drive across town to the get her things, when the other drugstore was just around the corner and the prices were better.
She said that the drugstore around the corner was more convenient and they had better prices, but every time she went to the other one, someone would always say hello to her when she walked in.
The important thing here is that you were invited to someone's house of business and treated like a trespasser, rather than a guest. It seems to me like the gent in your story forgot what was important, as well as his manners. But then again, maybe I'm old fashioned....
