I believe that's an old wives tale

"Let's face it: The obscenely priced gear has probably funded a lot of technology development for us pedestrian folks."

I disagree and think the giant mass market companies and other industries have contributed boatloads more to technical advancements than the smallish companies that produce the most expensive audio equipment. A smaller high end audio company may implement an expensive new technology but rarely would it have developed it.

I think audiophiles for the most part have been "trained" to believe this industry is actually lots more than it actually is. I think one can see the fiction arising in 70s issues of Audio magazine and becoming completely realized with marketing vehicles such as Stereophile and Absolute Sound.
