Maybe it's a sign of dwindling middle class in US?

Hence there is less middle ground left, it's either people looking for cheap "giant killers", or people who can afford uber expensive gear. Typically former will continue visiting web sites like this for research, and later never bothered with online research to begin with.

It's not that High End audio "abandoned" middle-class audiophiles, like some assert here. It's that there is less middle-class audiophiles in US over past 15 years, so audio manufacturers had to move up to luxury tier to survive.
