I think LAMM is an unfortunate exemplar. I am sure the amplifiers are well tuned and time was taken to make the stuff sound good to those who like it but the quality of components used inside is pedestrian. One has to admire what the fellow does with mostly modest parts but he has to be making a fortune on the stuff. I do not begrudge anyone making money - I prefer buying components where the price is in line with the components used to make it.
There is too much cult of personality in the industry.
It should be no surprise there is a backlash to this.
I agree that I have little desire to read about toys. But if someone found a toy that sounded really good I know I would be intrigued. My experience has taught me that this really doesn't happen.
There are many boutique shops selling interesting gear that should get more attention. The semi-DIY market is offering some really good stuff that rarely gets mentioned here. First to come to mind is the DDDAC1794.
One should aspire to good sound but to spend mindlessly is not possible for most of us and usually nothing more than pretension for those who can.
