I largely agree with you. The naysayers wish a $1500 Onkyo could sound as good as a Lamm or an ARC, but wishing won't make it so.
The myth of the Giant Killer is largely that..a myth.
But...the industry gives these folks lots of ammunition. I HAVE heard components that cost more than my car that sound unbelievably ORDINARY..or downright knarly in the worst case scenario.
Cmon...38K CD players? 50K speaker cables? 100K turntables?
Mikey says "you pays you get"...and that is largely true..but not always since their are plenty of gougers, charlatans, and snake oil salesman preying on the true believers, trust fund babies, the carriage trade, and newly minted rich.
