What should we expect? When people have money they find ways to spend it. When they don't have money, they find ways to save it...But, at least as I remember things, it could be plenty depressing back in the good ol' days. Sometimes, "The best they could afford" was really just "The gear most likely to impress their audiophile buddies." (!)
A lot of money was unwisely spent, no doubt about it. You routinely saw tons of money and worry lavished over tidy arrangements of exotic gear, gleaming machine work, furniture grade cabinetry, - and almost ZERO being spent on more basic and effective things like acoustic considerations.
I'd say that today's audiophile is spending his/her money more carefully and in some ways more wisely than ever before. Alternatives to big loudspeaker systems (hi-end headphone systems, compact audio and/or desktop audio, etc...) have greatly improved over the last fifteen years. Today's audiophile has more choices than ever before.
So, things seem less depressing when I realize that our economy has forced some of us to take another look at what it is that constitutes "refinement". Effective spending has taken the place of conspicuous consumption - at least in some ways...
