No matter if it trickles down to Pioneer home theater receivers for 349 bucks, what we speak of as high end has become less obtainable to the average audiophile than it used to be.
The 'high end' is an ever more rapidly receding section of the hobby. I don't blame people for disdaining it, actually.
I agree with you on price and performance at the 'mid fi' level - it is getting better all the time. But, if you start talking about how good that 1,500 dollar set of speakers you mentioned are able to perform, you'll quickly hear from some 'high end' snob opining the fact that you aren't talking about the current 'high end!'
