Nowadays, the price of "high end" is expanding so fast, I'm surprised we can't hear the red shifted Doppler distortion!
Just how many audiophiles would you tpredict could afford to sit around chat about the Esoteric SACD player with the VRDS-NEO transport?
How many of us at any level can hang and evaluate a dCS digital stack or pair of Wilson Alexandrias?
I like hi fi as much as the next guy, but the high end has kind of abandoned us, rather than the other way around.
The days of average middle class audiophiles being able to access the 'high end' are over...and it wasn't our doing.
I can recall the not too distant time when the crazy expensive MBL 101 was only 11 grand crazy, now it's magically migrated to over 70K. There has absolutely been a cynical (and perfectly legal) trend to rebrand "high end" from a process the average audiophile could take part in to one for people who walk into an audio salon and ask where the most expensive speaker is and will it match damask wall coverings.
We used to participate in hobby where one could readily experience different tastes of the 'high end' without throwing about amounts of money higher than median priced homes.
Don't blame us!
For fun: You should give a try to starting a thread about the Esoteric player/transport at various hi fi forums and see which places would generate the more high end chit chat!
