That's exactly my thinking too.
In my setup there are only a dozen devices (passive and active parts: wire, resistors, capacitors, tubes, transformers) of any kind between the output of my CD player and the connection to the individual speaker drivers. There is some wire, one capacitor in the amplifier's signal path and that one is in the power supply. The amp is basically only a power supply, 2 tubes (6N23P and 2A3), and an output transformer. The speaker crossovers have two caps and two inductors. That is pretty simple from head to tail with a minimal number of components.
How could this system go anywhere but the straight wire with gain category?
