I've told this story here before ...Many years ago Dave Brubeck walked into the shop I was working in to buy a system. We started at the top with McIntosh electronics, a big Denon table and large ADS speakers. He ended up buying a small Yamaha receiver, Yamaha turntable and the smallest Polk speakers.
When I asked why he said (I am paraphrasing) all he needed to hear was a rough representation of the music, his mind would fill in the rest.
I understand this as I have records that I have listened to monthly for 30 years that have subtle details that my car system and the system in my work shop cannot convey ...yet I still "hear" these details when listening on those systems.
Regarding your question, I'm not sure what school of thought I belong to. Whatever makes me smile is good enough. If its colored, but it makes my foot tap, that's fine.
Dean.
