My experience

I changed the coupling caps on a tube amp I own - spent about $150 - and achieved a modest sonic gain. I also changed the capacitors on both sides of the choke in a power supply to get better dynamics and achieved no audible gain. That cost around $200. I restored the original equipment. I saw a similar tube amp where the owner had changed virtually every component - including making it tube rectified - and he swears it sounds much better, and i am sure it does, since it is no longer the same amp.

Draw your own conclusions.
