Although I assume everyone who has gear modded truly expects it to sound better, perhaps that is only part of reason.If you look on Audio Circles you see all sorts of basically fan clubs for small manufacturers. The manufacturers themselves often participate in the threads and individuals seem particularly tied to the companies and their philosophies. Customers enjoy the feeling of being part of a club and not just an anonymous buyer who could never hope to call up the factory and speak to the owner-not that there is anything wrong with this .
I think modding, to a degree, gives owners that* my component is special and not run of the mill* feeling and enhances pride of ownership.
