Does an improvement have to be "unofficial" to be a "mod"?

... because Linn has been offering LP-12 "mods" for decades. As for mass-market products ... small cost increases result in much larger price increases at the retail level. Swapping out a fifty cent component for one that is a few dollars might not sound like a lot of money, but when it has a ten-fold effect on the price to the end user ... now multiply that by the number of "improved" components ... a component can quickly go from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars at the retail level.

I spent $600 to have a $200 Sony SACD player modified. The results were astounding, and for $800 I have a player that easily competes with much more expensive gear. The math looks pretty foolish at first, but the end result is what I was going for.
