RE: The "Mod" industry.

"With so many people doing mods to so many products, why is it that only good sounding products to begin with are canidates to be modded?"

Because they don't expect "bad-sounding" products after modification to be comparable to "good-sounding" products after modification. And hence think modifying "bad-sounding" products would likely be a waste of time and money.

I've often wondered how Bose 901s would sound like modified with Fostex full-range drivers..... But nobody seems interested in such undertaking.

Then again, there are some purportedly "bad-sounding" products that I think are actually pretty darn good. The Magnavox CDC-745 CD changer for one. (I think in "stock" configuration, it sounds better than most high-end players marketed today.) And Don Allen modifies these changers, gutting the stock analog circuit in favor of a tube section. This modified changer IMO is an absolute giant-killer. Yet most people don't regard this mass-produced CD changer as "good-sounding" in the first place.
