First, I suspect it is easier to take a good sounding product and upgrade it with better parts, internal damping, stiffer power supply, etc. - things that were done on the relative cheap to hit a price point.
Those things can only make a good sounding component sound better. A modder ought to be able to do this for less money than the 5X cost mark-up from manufacturer to retail.

That's not necessarily so - look at the mods for vintage Dyna tubed equipment and Hafler amps for example, products that sound pretty bad by today's standards.
