Re: Tubes or Solid State?

Hi Eric
My 1 cents worth-

I like Trevor's advice. He has obviously had wide experience with tubes, something I have not.

My last tubed equipment was an Audio Research SP9 and it sounded very good. However my present SS Plinius M16 is far superior. Despite what some might claim, tubes have no inherent advantage. It is the way all the devices, tubes or SS are circuited that matter. The comment that SS equipment can be very expensive to repair is valid but not necessarily an argument in favour of tubes.

The quality of build and components and hence reliability is the crucial factor here. Unfortunately the whole topic of reliability is not always treated with an even hand. Some have an extremely bad experience and shout it to the world while the great mass of us have few problems and do not bother reporting them. Most equipment is pretty reliable these days but it would be worth your while posting an enquiry on reliability once you have narrowed down your choice.
