Re: Tubes or Solid State?

Tubes are a more visceral , visually stimulating and hands on type product.
Long term average satisfaction with a slightly euphonic tube system is likely to be higher than with a "set and forget straight wire with gain" SS amp. Both genres do some things better than the other , if you want pounding synth bass at rock concert levels , tubes arent for you , if you revel in the glory of delicate midrange and airy sweet treble , valves might just be the ticket. (music tastes play a part here)

Maintenance isn't gnerally high unless you become anal and obsessive over the valve gear and experiment with different brands etc. Obviously factors such as speaker choice will moderate your choices in terms of power and so forth. If you venture into the relams of esoteric and multivalve amplifiers the price of these and your ability to afford them should preclude the question "how much does it cost to run"

Currently , with normal stereo and the media it uses , the situation is that sonic reproduction doesn't mimic live , so you might as well go with what you fancy .Valves and their different sonic signatures will open a new world of audio to you. Buy 2nd hand or kit form if you aren't sure you will be a dyed in the wool bottlehead. (PS I dont believe one gets the *real* valve sound with a valve pre and a SS power amp , go the whole hog or at least let the power amp be valve based )
Lots of folks here will only be too willing to point you in the right direction. Should you wish to experiment by changing valves etc , one doesnt have to be a rocket scientist to do so , its plug and play stuff.

I have a high tech digital active system and a marvellous valve headphone amp , I enjoy both and look forward to visiting and listening to my friend's valve based systems.

Go where your ears and soul takes you.
