Tubes or Solid State?

I am about to start looking for my first "hi end" audio system ( out goes the receiver!)
My first problem is the "tubes vs solid state dilemma.
From many posts I've read there seems to be some concensus that in general tube equipment sounds superior to solid state.

Of course I know that there are exceptions but before I start looking at tube equipment, I am concerned about the reliability of tube gear compared to solid state and the maintenance required with tubes.

Also, I see that many people combine solid state amps with tube preamps.
What is the reason for this and do you think that this is a good way to go?
